“It’s pure prejudice to dismiss apprenticeships in favour of degrees” says LWBLA Director Ali Kaye in today’s Guardian, 2nd September:

Link to article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/sep/01/prejudice-dismissing-apprenticeships

The article highlights the need for more apprenticeships as part of a broad solution to developing “able, confident young people” with the learning and skills required to develop themselves and to drive the economy forward. All “motivated young people” should have the opportunity to realise their ambitions and they require better and earlier guidance to support them to make informed choices. The piece highlights the challenges in London with an economy made up of largely small and medium sized employers, and how apprenticeships can provide a solution to their skills needs.

Addressing adult literacy needs must be regarded as a moral imperative and the cycle of inter-generational difficulties with literacy must be broken. These are the main findings of a year-long Independent Inquiry into Adult Literacy, supported by NIACE.

The Government consultation New Challenges, New Chances - Next Steps in Implementing the Further Education Reform Programme launched in August 2011 sets out proposals for taking forward the strategy for FE and skills published in Skills for Sustainable Growth and Investing in Skills for Sustainable Growth in November 2010.

Colleges are at the centre of policy changes that are likely to change the FE landscape and the sector as a whole over the coming years.

This seminar is intended for people working in FE, and others with an interest in and concern for lifelong learning and adult learners and will explore the implications and impact on the sector and will provide an opportunity to explore in detail:

how the policy changes will impact on the FE sector in terms of freedom, fairness and responsibilities: what do they mean in practice?
the implications of Level 3 fee loans for learners and FE institutions
the development of new approaches to higher education delivery
the impact the proposals will have on widening participation and progression for adults
