South East Young People Strategic Analysis 2009

Flexible delivery to help the Neet group: June 2009
A message from Verity Bullough, LSC National Director – Funding, Planning and Performance about the arrangements for the dissemination of the first set of individual college and provider Framework for Excellence scores and grades.
Workforce data LLUK is responsible for collecting and analysing all data about the workforce across the FE system in England. Much of this is available as published reports, alongside various other kinds of LLUK research. A Directory of all LLUK's research reports since 2005 is located at: http://www.lluk.org/research-directory.htm . 'Recession-proofing' the UK's workers UKCES has published a report on 'recession-proofing' the UK's workers by updating their employability skills. 'The Employability Challenge' looked at the work of more than 200 providers, and features 20 of those in case studies of effective development of employability skills. The report finds a mixed picture of preparation, however - meaning that many employers have to invest in offering their new recruits everyday skills such as taking messages or writing reports. Six key features were identified as being central to success in the field, with providers' training being:
- based on real workplace practice - ideally with real employer involvement or the involvement of people from outside the learning environment;
- practical and applied in nature - based around genuine work-place experiences or high quality work simulations, with learners progressing by learning through doing things well - or wrongly;
- personalised - to reflect individual needs, strengths and weaknesses and preferred learning styles;
- serious and disciplined - incorporating clear feedback and real consequences for success or failure, just as in the workplace;
- reflective - providing continuing opportunities for individuals to reflect upon their own, and each other's, actions and learn from them;
- and underpinned by a whole-institution commitment to employability - with strong leadership and resources, including extra investment in staff development and capability, and even whole institutional change.
The main report, a short executive summary version, and a booklet of the 20 case studies are all now published in PDF format, on-line at the UKCES website: http://www.ukces.org.uk/Default.aspx?page=5. Hampshire
